English 313; Advanced Expository Writing for Elementary Education Majors

I believe writing is a form of communication, and that effective argumentation, or rhetoric, is a way to achieve greater learning and enlightenment. I focus on creating a classroom that centers on effective collaboration in both the creation and revision of texts. I also believe in being a mindful writer, one who is careful and conscientious about the way in which they approach an audience. In these sample schedules, there are many peer review days and days in which "working drafts" are scheduled throughout each unit. This structure is intended to help students form and shape their arguments with an audience in mind, an audience (like their classmates), that will provide relevant and timely feedback throughout the writing processes. |
I believe that you have to be confident in your individual abilities as a writer before you can teach the principles of “good” writing to others—particularly to children. In order to first see themselves as a 'writer,' I structure my class around opportunities to write; varying style, genre, audience, and writing practices. I focus on providing opportunities to engage in research and to think about conversations in the field of education; helping students understand and apply rhetorical principles to the situations they will face in their future as writers and as elementary school teachers. I hope to give students the necessary tools to feel confident as writers, so they can then teach the principles of effective writing to others. |
